Remove GST hurdles to improve affordable housing supply
If there is a real appetite for reform to improve the supply of social and affordable housing there are a few tax issues that could be tackled now.
Matthew CridlandContributorPowerHousing Australia’s 2022 affordable housing report, prepared with CoreLogic, states the median value of capital city dwellings rose 258 per cent in 20 years. About 20 per cent of key workers in Sydney and Melbourne experience housing stress, pushing key workers to city fringes.
To alleviate housing pressures, Treasurer Jim Chalmers is encouraging super funds to deploy capital to support new housing investment. Dr Chalmers, together with Housing Minister Julie Collins, will engage in a series of round-table discussions with super funds and large banks. This is in addition to proposed consultations with the states, local councils and the construction sector.
