Councils from Newcastle to Wollongong will be given mandatory housing targets for five, 10 and 20 years by the NSW government’s new central planning agency, a process designed to force recalcitrant local authorities to approve more apartments and houses.
The Greater Cities Commission, which replaced the Greater Sydney Commission in April, said it would issue the targets for every council under its supervision, an area that covers three-quarters of the state’s population.
