A t 10am on Tuesday insurance lawyer Elizabeth Papandrea finished a workout in Sydney’s Kings Cross with a bike sprint. Standing on the polished concrete floor of the mood-lit Savage Squad gym – a former dive bar – owner and personal trainer Justin Savage watched over her seven-month-old son, Maximus.

Papandrea, 43, returned to Sydney last November after eight years in Hong Kong and moved into an apartment in nearby Macleay Street – once a regular battleground for the NSW Public Order and Riot Squad. She wanted her son to grow up in a healthy suburb popular with young families. The free gym childcare doesn’t hurt, either.
