Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews’ push to reform planning and build 800,000 new homes over the next decade ignores recommendations from the state’s infrastructure adviser and parliament to replace stamp duty with a broad-based land tax that would free up existing housing stock.
The policies Mr Andrews announced this week to supercharge home-building – which the construction industry said would require an extra 50,000 workers – failed to recognise the way tax reforms could ensure more efficient use of existing dwellings, critics said.
