The federal government’s National Housing Accord centres on an ambitious goal to build 1 million new homes between mid-2024 and mid-2029. To support this initiative, Treasurer Jim Chalmers has asked the states to develop proposals by June this year for ways to improve the speed of land release, rezonings and development approvals.

While a review of planning laws and processes is crucial, the impact of GST and state taxes should also be considered.
