The woes of Australian construction can be summed up in the story of a $73 million public gym and swimming pool project that collapsed last October in Melbourne’s inner-eastern Kew.

About 10pm on October 20 the steel-trussed roof fell in, with a crash locals said sounded like an explosion. Twisted metal members that were to have held up the roof fell inwards from both sides.
