SA donation ban will cut off grassroots democracy
By pushing debate into third-party organisations, South Australian Premier Malinauskas’ proposed election laws would force politics to move to the extremes.
Adam StokerLawyerSometimes a sitting government seeks to stack the electoral deck in its favour using complex or restrictive regulation of donations. It should go without saying that it’s always wrong to manipulate the rules of the democratic process to suit yourself.
But South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas′ proposal to ban all electoral donations to political parties and participants – other than unions – is much worse.
