SA premier slams migration cuts, raises alarm on innovation

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has hit out at proposed cuts to international student numbers, saying they threaten the viability of his state’s universities, its research sector and AUKUS.

The newly created Adelaide University, which got the official sign-off from the federal higher education regulator on Tuesday, will also be seriously curtailed if Coalition plans to cut net migration to 160,000 in 2024-25 go ahead, given prior expectations it would enrol 13,000 additional students over eight years.
