Private insurers tell government to stay out of market

Private insurance companies have hit back at the prospect of the federal government entering the insurance market in Northern Australia, saying taxpayers' money would be better spent on mitigation for homes and businesses.

With the Northern Australia Insurance Taskforce interim report commissioning modelling to look into the financial impact of both a government mutual and re-insurance pool, Queensland-based bank and insurance group Suncorp said government intervention was the wrong way to go.
