WA’s leap into the leadership unknown

Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson could become the first Labor premier from the Left of the party, in what former Liberal prime minister John Howard once described as Australia’s most entrepreneurial state.

The emergence of Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson as the frontrunner to succeed retiring premier Mark McGowan has introduced a significant new dynamic into West Australian politics.

Sanderson surprised by winning the support of her powerful left-wing United Workers’ Union faction over long-term Deputy Premier Roger Cook at a hastily arranged faction meeting on Tuesday.
