Welcome to Country: In defence of culture wars

Culture wars break out amid debates such as the frequency of welcome to country ceremonies because elites fail to listen to ordinary people’s legitimate social concerns.

There is a tendency among people on the left to dismiss conversations on contentious social issues as “culture wars”, a pejorative used to end conversations they would rather avoid.

This censorious approach to political discourse has prompted some commentators to suggest that Opposition Leader Peter Dutton should not be talking about welcome to country ceremonies being “overdone”.
