The national building watchdog is considering landmark action that could result in a large building firm being banned from tendering for Commonwealth-funded construction work for up to 12 months.

Fair Work Building and Construction director Nigel Hadgkiss revealed on Thursday he was considering applying to Employment Minister Michaelia Cash to have sanctions imposed on Queensland firm Hutchinson Builders for breaching the federal building code.
