New planning rules in NSW designed to turbocharge home building near train stations could be derailed by local councils – including on the wealthy north shore – which have been accused of weaponising heritage protections to limit development.

As the Minns government expands its signature housing supply package focused on lifting height limits and density near town centres and public transport, there is evidence some councils are resisting the supply push by rezoning large tracts of land for heritage protection.
