Will Ley and O’Brien have enough vaudeville to keep their jobs?

These days, staffers are more likely to focus on creating a nifty video for their social media. But no matter the medium, politics still needs to have a bit of performance about it to cut through.

As we approach the start of a new parliamentary term, political tacticians on both sides will be hard at work thinking of witty and withering one-liners that they can ever so casually weave into the allotted speaking slot granted to them during Question Time. All looking for that sweet spot that gets the tribe behind them laughing at the expense of those opposite.

The standout for political nerds remains former prime minister Paul Keating’s most witty and wicked parliamentary putdowns from more than two decades ago. Thanks to YouTube, a generation that was in nappies can now recite by heart his best sledges.
