Why I finally believe Canberra is getting my EPBC reforms done

The foundation stones of the 2020 review – efficiency and efficacy – have eluded us in the context of environmental protection for decades.

Just over five years ago, I submitted to then environment minister Sussan Ley my Independent Review of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

The review was greeted with support across a wide range of stakeholders – conservationists, scientists, academics and business. They saw the recommendations as being directed to achieving the two fundamental imperatives: protection and restoration of our environment and business efficiency in dealing with environmental regulations. Ley embraced the review with enthusiasm.
