Libby Mettam will stand down as leader of the Western Australian Liberals after the party’s disastrous election performance, paving the way for former broadcaster Basil Zempilas to become the next opposition leader.

Zempilas told media on Thursday afternoon he would put his hand up for the leadership after Mettam issued a statement saying she no longer had the support of her parliamentary colleagues.
