Treasury says 1.2m house target won’t be met. Chalmers says yes it can

Jim Chalmers says there is still time to make policy changes to enable the federal and state governments to reach their target of building 1.2 million new homes by 2029, after Treasury cast grave doubt on the ambition.

At the same time, the treasurer downplayed a separate warning from his department that the government needed to both raise taxes and cut spending to return the budget to sustainability.
