Race Discrimination commissioner Giridharan Sivaraman has refused to condemn the phrase “from the river to the sea” during a fiery, five-hour Senate hearing on Friday that exposed deep divisions within the human rights watchdog.

Mr Sivaraman – who is leading a government-commissioned study into racism at Australian universities – said he needed context about the phrase before he was willing to comment on it.
