Too close to home: China’s Solomons deal to stretch Australian defence

China’s security pact with the Solomon Islands will sap the Australian Defence Force of resources and crimp its ability to make a contribution to broader regional security, strategic experts warn.

The prospect of a Chinese military base being established less than 2000 kilometres from the Australian mainland removes one of the chief advantages military planners have enjoyed when it comes to defending the continent.
