Education has traditionally been a strength for the Labor Party. Yet the performance of the Albanese government in an area critical to the future success of Australia’s economy and society has been mixed.

Labor has made a start on fixing the well-known problems in the nation’s schools. Less successful has been its highly political management of the university sector. However, the challenges in schools and universities are now dwarfed by the need to restore the loss of faith in the childcare system due to this week’s shocking events in Victoria.
