The latest inflation numbers may be very slightly higher than the market had expected but are plenty good enough for Jim Chalmers to rush to claim victory. Underlying inflation back below the magic threshold of 3 per cent is exactly the sort of news the Albanese government wants voters to hear in the last week of an election campaign dominated by the cost of living.
