Widespread data breaches have fuelled record privacy concerns among Australians, rampant distrust of social media and surging demands for stronger legislative protections, including for artificial intelligence applications.

The latest triennial survey of community attitudes conducted for the privacy commissioner found that Australians were increasingly aware their personal information needed to be protected – community understanding of the issue has risen by 5 percentage points to 90 per cent since 2020.
