The Tax Office should give small businesses a free pass for first offences and permanently end its previous heavy-handed debt collection efforts, ombudsman Kate Carnell says.
Releasing a report on how to make the tax system less complicated and less demanding for the 2 million small and family businesses, the outgoing ombudsman said ATO officials regularly lost sight of the individuals behind debt amounts.
