Slashing Medicare rebates for private hospital care could generate up to $2 billion a year to support general practice and reverse the decline of bulk billing, former health secretary Stephen Duckett says.
But the industry body representing private hospitals has lashed the proposal as “ridiculous and simplistic”, warning it would massively increase out-of-pocket costs or force health insurers to increase their premiums.
