An elderly woman has been found dead inside a flooded home in Lismore, in northern NSW, where waters slowly started to recede on Tuesday from their record levels.

Dramatic rescues were undertaken throughout the day and the extent of the damage is still unknown with hundreds of people unable to return to their homes and businesses.
