Senate scramble as Labor pushes ‘wedgislation’ before election

Labor is scrambling to lock in deals on several key pieces of legislation, including potential vote winners in tax breaks for miners and keeping the National Broadband Network in public hands, in what may be its last opportunity to pass bills before the election.

As MPs return to Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday night will echo Treasurer Jim Chalmers’ call for a business-led economic recovery, striking a conciliatory tone at the Australian Industry Group’s annual dinner after the government earlier this term saddled firms with union-friendly industrial relations changes.
