Federal Court Chief Justice Debra Mortimer has said livestreaming more cases would make the justice system more accessible to the public, arguing that courts should move beyond traditional media as the main conduit for open justice.
The court’s approach to open justice has been under scrutiny since it adopted new rules restricting how journalists can access documents in 2023. A series of wide-ranging suppression orders have followed, prompting some judges to advocate for a greater emphasis on transparency.
