Offer to exempt judges from super tax hike not enough for Senate

Treasurer Jim Chalmers offered to exempt retired judges from his plan to increase the tax on superannuation accounts worth more than $3 million, but this was rejected by the Senate crossbench, which continues to demand greater concessions in return for supporting the tax hike.

With Parliament to resume next week for what could be the final sitting fortnight before the federal election, the government has, in recent days, flagged one last push to pass the measure. It is the government’s only significant revenue raising policy.
