Morrison seeks cabinet privilege waiver ahead of robodebt appearance

Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison is seeking relaxed cabinet confidentiality rules ahead of his testimony next week to the robodebt royal commission, with his counsel arguing it is necessary for him to defend his reputation.

Cabinet documents and other sensitive documents are generally protected from public release through the courts under what was formerly known as crown privilege, but is now called public interest immunity. This requires courts and judicial commissions to consider the public interest in making sensitive documents public.
