Senior ministers have acknowledged the need for changes to reverse the erosion of Australia's press freedom following top level talks in Canberra on Wednesday, media chiefs say.

Nine chief executive Hugh Marks, News Corporation Australasia executive chairman Michael Miller and ABC managing director David Anderson said they had discussed exemptions and defences for journalists from national security laws, which leave reporters at threat of jail for doing their job.
