Mark Rigotti is wrong. Lawyers aren’t to blame for over-regulation

Most regulatory work is “cost of doing business” work. Much of it is uninteresting and fee sensitive. It needs oversight by experienced lawyers or compliance officers and is likely to be increasingly systemised.

More regulation is a wishing well: governments toss more of our resources down the well, and we all hope for benefits.

Contrary to the headline of Mark Rigotti’s op-ed on over-regulation, “Lawyers at fault for Australia’s regulatory red tape burden”, the drivers of our wishing well delusion are more profound than lawyer self-interest.
