Lift RBA target band, Costello dares Chalmers

Australia’s longest-serving treasurer, Peter Costello, has dared Labor to lift the Reserve Bank’s target band for inflation rather than continue to attack the bank over monetary policy and risk causing it severe reputational damage.

Mr Costello expressed fears that a line had been crossed after former treasurer Wayne Swan accused the central bank on Friday of putting economic dogma ahead of rational economic decision-making in its refusal to lower rates.
