Letters: Chris Bowen out of touch on Sun Cable

Sun Cable voluntary administration; energy transition; duck-shooting in Victoria; Benjamin Netanyahu’s new Israeli coalition; vitamins as a mosquito repellent; Julian Assange’s fate.

Apparently, Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen remains “very upbeat and excited” about Sun Cable’s future, saying “this is primarily a commercial decision about structure and about the way forward” and “it doesn’t represent on either of the big investors’ behalf or anybody else’s behalf any sort of lack of faith in the future of Sun Cable” (“Accusations fly in billionaire battle for Sun Cable”, January 13).

Does Mr Bowen not understand what voluntary administration is? Under s.436A of the Corporations Act a company can only appoint an administrator if the board has resolved that the company is, or likely to become, insolvent. Therefore, the appointment of administrators is exactly what Mr Bowen said it isn’t – a lack of faith in the future of Sun Cable on the part of the big investors and other parties who no longer wish to fund it.
