Labor must drop flawed and friendless freedom of information bill

In opposition, the prime minister talked a big game on transparency. It’s about time he walked the walk on open government.

The Albanese government’s innocuously titled but regressive “freedom of information amendment bill”, currently sitting before parliament, failed to find any friends when submissions to the Senate’s inquiry into it closed last week – other than from within government itself.

Amidst virtually unanimous damning assessments of the bill and its likely consequences came three apparent endorsements in varying degrees from the Australian Public Service Commission, Services Australia and the Attorney-General’s Department.
