Former Liberal prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has suggested it would be unfair to blame the government if Donald Trump refuses to grant Australia a tariff exemption, undermining Peter Dutton’s case that Anthony Albanese must bear responsibility.
The intervention came as Australia’s first monthly trade surplus with the United States since records began in the 1980s undermined Albanese’s argument for Trump to grant an exemption from tariffs, trade data revealed on Tuesday.
