The Albanese government is playing down the prospects of securing a tariff exemption from the Trump administration, amid fears a rejection by the White House could prove awkward in the first few days of the federal election campaign.
As the government mounts a full diplomatic effort this week, including a whistle-stop visit to Washington by Treasurer Jim Chalmers, senior sources said the mood within government was one of growing pessimism.
