‘It’s not 2022 anymore’: How teal MPs are reshaping their pitch

A shift in language from teal MPs to emphasise issues such as housing affordability and cost of living tells a story about the changing political landscape.

When first-term teal independent MP Zoe Daniel delivered her re-election pitch at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday, the third most common word she uttered was “tax”.

It was mentioned 13 times, ranking behind “politics” (15 mentions) and “real” (17 mentions). Indeed, “taxes” and “taxpayers” combined got run 18 times in the 30-minute speech.
