Islamophobia surges more than 500pc, says racism register
Islamophobia in Australia has surged by 530 per cent since last year’s October 7 terrorist attack on Israel by Islamic militant group Hamas, according to one organisation tracking anti-Muslim hate, highlighting the “other side” amid the national debate over antisemitism.
The executive director of Islamophobia Register Australia, Nora Amath, said her organisation had received reports of 989 incidents involving abuse, acts of physical intimidation and violence such as having hijabs removed, vandalism and discrimination against Muslim Australians.
