Crowded into an underground bunker underneath the Australian embassy as smoke billowed across Washington’s Potomac River, John Howard wondered who was next.
“All sorts of things went through all sorts of minds,” former prime minister Howard recalls in an interview with AFR Weekend to mark the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the first salvo in what would become the war on terror.
