There were 300,000 fewer overseas students in Australia in April than at the end of 2024 as government reforms aimed at limiting new enrolments take effect, but experts warn a continuation of the trend could lead to skill and labour shortages.
However, the spectre of a second attempt to reintroduce caps on student enrolments has lessened after Julian Hill, the Albanese government’s new assistant minister for international education, said numbers were “heading in the right direction”.
