How a hoax bomb plot pushed Albanese to shake up security

The prime minister’s cabinet reshuffle marks the start of an opportunity for him to reshape the voices who advise him on national security.

Anthony Albanese rarely makes admissions of political errors. But in reuniting the Federal Police and spy agency ASIO in the Home Affairs Department, the prime minister has made two concessions in respect to national security, seen as a traditional weak point for Labor.

The first is that Albanese has undone the original decision to hive off the AFP and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation from the mega department and assign them to the attorney-general’s portfolio.
