Foreign Minister Penny Wong has put China on notice that releasing two detained Australians would benefit the repair of the relationship, as she played down expectations her visit to Beijing would produce significant breakthroughs.

Ahead of her departure on Tuesday, Senator Wong also said trade diversification would remain a priority for the government despite business hopes China could soon back down and begin easing sanctions against what was $20 billion of Australian exports.
