Great expectations for migrant quota boost may fall on deaf ears

State governments are concerned their individual requests for a boost to migration could be curbed by the Albanese government with a mooted increase to the cap still being insufficient to fill labour shortages.

Premiers are also poised to push at next week’s Jobs and Skills Summit to allow migrants already in Australia, such as students, to work more hours to ease shortages immediately, particularly in sectors such as hospitality.
