Local universities are caught up in Donald Trump’s culture wars. But the threat isn’t just from a rampant US administration looking for targets – it’s also home-grown and partly self-inflicted.

My regular alumni email update from the interim president of Columbia University is designed to be reassuring. It tells me the university’s response to government agencies “outlines the substantive work … to make every student, faculty, and staff member safe and welcome on our campus”.

That this president has an interim in her title demonstrates the university’s past substantive work wasn’t enough to satisfy US Congress in what now seems the distant Biden era.
