Dutton marooned as Alfred puts the wind at Albanese’s back

The optics could not have been worse. Quietly ditching your home state as it battened down the hatches for an almighty superstorm? What was the opposition leader thinking?

“Events, dear boy, events.” That’s what former British prime minister Harold Macmillan allegedly uttered more than 60 years ago when asked by a journalist what was most likely to blow political leaders off course.

While many armchair pundits (including myself) somewhat prematurely declared the 47th parliament unofficially over, Cyclone Alfred (formerly known as Cyclone Anthony) had other ideas. And it has given Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton cause to think about the effect of unexpected events on their respective destinies.
