Naturally occurring hydrogen has been detected in Tumut and parts of western NSW, sparking Labor hopes that the fledgling sector could be spurred by ambitious minerals explorers wanting to drill for the gas.
Hydrogen, which produces only water and oxygen when burnt, has long been touted as an alternative to fossil fuels in industrial processes such as ammonia and fertiliser production, as well as in heavy vehicle transportation and iron and steelmaking.
