Victoria's state of disaster has been extended and authorities and fire-weary communities are bracing for the return of scorching temperatures, strong winds and lightning strikes from late Thursday that could inflame the bushfire crisis.

"We don't lightly extend the state of disaster. We have done it because we believe that it will save lives and that, after all, is the most important thing," Premier Daniel Andrews said at a press conference on Thursday morning.
