Disability support executive Carol Berry is the favourite to replace retiring Labor MP Stephen Jones in the NSW seat of Whitlam, with senior sources saying she is the prime minister’s preferred pick.

Mr Jones last week announced his surprise departure from politics after 15 years, leaving little time for Labor to choose a fresh candidate ahead of the federal election due on or before May 17.
