NSW Chief Justice Andrew Bell has emerged as a serious contender to replace Susan Kiefel as chief justice of the High Court when she retires in November.

Justice Stephen Gageler – the former solicitor-general and the court’s most senior judge after Justice Kiefel – had been considered a lock for the top job, but that has changed in recent weeks.
