The political impact of spiralling interest rates and energy costs will soon be put to the test in a byelection in the marginal suburban Melbourne seat of Aston, following the resignation of former Liberal minister Alan Tudge.

Mr Tudge, who has been embroiled in the robo-debt royal commission due to his past actions as human services minister, and who stood aside from the ministry last year following revelations of an extramarital affair, announced on Thursday he was quitting politics next week.
